The Actor’s Director Intensive

mc

Dear artists,

16th Street Actors Studio is thrilled to announce the launch of a groundbreaking new program for gifted emerging theatre directors.

The Actor’s Director.

The course will be hosted by world-class West End and Broadway directors and dear friends of 16th Street Actors Studio. Who will provide emerging directors with the tools and techniques to build a rock-solid methodology for directing professional actors.

To celebrate this new program, we’re offering a rare opportunity for a small group to work intimately in an intensive with one of the worlds’ most esteemed directors, Ian Rickson.

The Actor’s Director Intensive – starting soon.

‘Creating Characters and Worlds’, hosted online by master British director Ian Rickson.

“Rickson’s great gift is his ability to encourage actors to dig deep and reveal their truest selves.” – ”he understands the importance of collaboration and brings out the best in both actors and writers alike.” – The Telegraph/The Times.

Top-level West End and Broadway Director Ian Rickson (Jerusalem, The Weir, The River, Electra, The Goat, Mojo) is famous for his empowering and deeply enriched, versatile approach to rehearsal techniques. Ferociously creative and fertile, yet humble, Ian is famous for tailoring his process to service the unique and specialist needs of highly idiosyncratic playwriting.

In these sessions, Ian will address the exploratory stages of rehearsal. Discovering the inherent needs of each individual playwright and sharing some of his profoundly effective techniques for helping actors generate original and compelling performances. He will be joined by respected Australian director and 16th Street’s Head of Acting, Iain Sinclair.

The two directors will investigate a selection of master playwrights from across the world together in an open forum alongside participants. The emerging directors will be included in these conversations on an equal footing as colleagues and fellow artists. They will be expected to engage outside the old hegemony of the master director controlling from above. All of the directors in the room will explore the myriad of different ways a director may help actors access the unique characteristics of each writer being brought to life.

The participating directors will also be required to act scenes from the selected plays. Learning the craft from the other side of the looking glass and gaining first hand experience of exploratory actor and text centred processes. Following on from the discussions with Ian Rickson, Iain Sinclair will then engage in workshops IRL with the directors – practically engaging with the ideas that emerge from each online salon and reporting back to Ian in London.
