Acting for Commercial Theatre with Gareth Reeves

Led by Gareth Reeves (Harry Potter and the Cursed Child), actors will dive into the world of Commercial Theatre across 2-days in this new 16th Street Masterclass. 

With extensive stage and screen experience on both sides of the Tasman including working with Melbourne Theatre Company, Bell Shakespeare, The National Theatre of Great Britain, Malthouse Theatre and Red Stitch Actors Theatre, Gareth will guide actors on creating memorable characters, standing out in Commercial Theatre auditions and much more! The goal is to equip actors with key skills and knowledge to excel in the world of commercial theatre. 

Throughout the masterclass, participants will engage in a combination of discussions, exercises, scene work, and performance opportunities including working on coldreads and mock auditions.

 

What to expect: 


An exploration of Commercial Theatre, the role of the actor, its demands and characteristics. 

Day 1: 

Scene Work and Performance 

Participants rehearse scenes with feedback and direction with an emphasis on authenticity, connection and memorable characters. 

Understanding characterisation in Commercial Theatre

  • Techniques for developing memorable characters
  • Analysis of archetypes and stereotypes
  • Developing character profiles through exercises
  • Mastering vocal and physical techniques
  • Vocal and physical exercises for stage performance
  • Incorporating voice and movement into characterization

Day 2:

Audition Techniques for Commercial Theatre

Participants will be invited to perform an audition piece suitable for Commercial Theatre and receive feedback and redirection, drawing on the lessons and work from day 1. 

  • Understanding the Commercial Theatre audition process
  • Guidance for preparing monologues and cold readings

Q&A and discussion 

  • Open forum for participants to ask questions and reflect on the 2-days

Gareth Reeves


Gareth is a New Zealand born artist and graduate of Toi Whakaari: The NZ Drama School and has over 20 years industry experience. Most recently Gareth played Harry Potter in a record-breaking 5-year run at Melbourne’s Princess Theatre in the Australian production of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.

Gareth has extensive stage and screen experience on both sides of the Tasman including working with Melbourne Theatre Company, Bell Shakespeare, The National Theatre of Great Britain, Malthouse Theatre, Red Stitch Actors Theatre and television productions like Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries, Wentworth, The Leftovers, Mary Making of a Princess and films such as Pete’s Dragon, Under the Mountain, The Lord of the Rings, A Song of Good and I’m not Harry Jensen. 

Gareth has taught Acting Technique, Improvisation, Devising and Movement across the age range and continues to pursue his own training in Acting Technique, Movement, Stage Combat and Education. Gareth is a passionate actor and teacher who uses a variety of skills and techniques in his work gleaned from over 20 years of work and continual self education and improvement.
