Authenticity on Screen Part II with director Jason Raftopoulos

Feature film scene work with award-winning director Jason Raftopoulos

We return to the studio with internationally acclaimed director and writer Jason Raftopoulous. Designed to challenge the actor, this 6-week course will start from a deeper place in the work and focus on the importance of authenticity and delivering honest performances on camera.

This course is a continuation of Jason’s training in Part I and is designed with actors who have worked and or trained with Jason Raftopolous previously in mind. Those who are interested in working with Jason for the first time are also welcome to apply. Please note the course will be structured differently from part one, and more class time has been allocated to allow that.

“Jason encouraged me to push past my habits as an actor, which led me to major breakthroughs. His teaching was simple and straightforward and allowed me to dig deeper than I had ever before.”

Jason Raftopoulos is an award-winning director with an impressive list of credits. His feature film, West of Sunshine, (which featured 16th Street alumni) premiered In Competition (Orizzonti) at the 74th Venice International Film Festival in 2017, which garnered Jason nominations for both “The Golden Lion of the Future” award and for “Best Film”.

His most recent feature, Voices in Deep premiered at MIFF this month. Voices in Deep tells the story of Bobby (Hannah Sims, 16th Street Alumni), an Australian volunteer, and two orphaned refugees, Tarek (Christos Karavevas) and Zaeed (Michael Hilane), as they fight to survive in the aftermath of a humanitarian crisis.

Course Learnings

“Authenticity drives all my choices and eliciting honest performances from actors and non-actors was key in the film. My job is ultimately to create an environment on set where actors could live unencumbered, regardless of the difficulties of the shoot.” – Jason Raftopoulos

  • In-depth exploration and discussion of a screenplay.
  • Feel empowered collaborating on set with a director and how to process direction and feedback.
  • Dive further into the techniques for conveying meaning and emotion through physicality, reactions, and subtext.
  • Understand the subtleties and ways of working with your scene partner.
  • The final class will conclude with a filming session of the scenes (with our new equipment), directed by Jason.

“Jason’s approach to directing was so truthful and refreshing, it changed the way I approached acting. There’s a purpose and a reason for everything he did. He is passionate about his craft and strives to bring out only the authentic truth in his actors.”
